Carmageddon Schmarmageddon. Eat Real Festival 2011.
By Any and Everywhere | July 25, 2011
I know, I know. Carmageddon is a thing of our past here in LA. It was overhyped and ended up being the best weekend ever to drive anywhere. Because I am a smart person, I assumed the rest of the city would stay home, which is exactly why I did not. Hopping in my car with a good friend to travel from the Valley to Culver City for the Eat Real Festival, followed by a drive to Sunset Gower Studios for The Saban Free Clinic’s Extravaganza for the Senses. As you can see, I was fearless, and so was my friend Brandi who came along for the ride. Having never attended Eat Real Festival before, I had no idea what I was in for, but I knew that it would be a morning of food, drink and music. What else do you need besides that?

I just about lost my mind when I saw these cuties. Just look at them! They have no cares in the world.

California Roll from the Temaki Truck. A little one in our group ate it all in less than one minute!

It's Chris from Chris & Jenn Photography based in the OC. They were taking free photos of people in the Helms Bakery Truck.

Watch out! We have hot cross buns to deliver! (Photo courtesy Chris & Jenn Photography - http://www.chrisandjennphotos.com)

The folks behind 100 Seeds of Change are doing a lot of great work to bring food justice to Inglewood. They were stationed right next to Chef Crystal Blanchette of Inner City Kitchens who works with members of urban communities to teach healthy eating choices.

Carlsbad Aquafarm's sustainble, farm-raised oysters. They had a mighty long line of folks waiting for freshly shucked oysters.

The line for Big Mista's was the longest thing ever in life. Maybe they were waiting for the spicy, sticky chicken 'wangs'? Or was it the pig candy? Whatever they wanted, the people were ready to wait!
Congratulations to the Eat Real Festival team! They put on a hugely successful event that showcased local products and talent for thousands of people to enjoy. (Thousands of people who were not scared away by the silly threat of Carmageddon!) The outdoor performances, demonstrations and food trucks kept us busy. Venturing into the marketplace, we were hit by a throng of local vendors hawking their quality wares. Talk about an overload of stimuli. It was a great way to spend an afternoon with a few friends, and the best part for me was coming into contact with two local charity and community-based organizations that I would love to work with very soon. Food Forward LA and Inner City Kitchen, I’m talking about you! As for Eat Real Festival 2012, in the words of Arnold…”I’ll be back”.
