Carmageddon Schmarmageddon. Eat Real Festival 2011.

By | July 25, 2011

Eat Real Festival Banner - Any and EverywhereI know, I know. Carmageddon is a thing of our past here in LA. It was overhyped and ended up being the best weekend ever to drive anywhere. Because I am a smart person, I assumed the rest of the city would stay home, which is exactly why I did not. Hopping in my car with a good friend to travel from the Valley to Culver City for the Eat Real Festival, followed by a drive to Sunset Gower Studios for The Saban Free Clinic’s Extravaganza for the Senses. As you can see, I was fearless, and so was my friend Brandi who came along for the ride. Having never attended Eat Real Festival before, I had no idea what I was in for, but I knew that it would be a morning of food, drink and music. What else do you need besides that?

Event Sched ERF - Any and Everywhere

Two days of events. The scheduled was packed with performances, demonstrations, talks and more.

ERF Stage - Any and Everywhere

The crowds gathered near and around the main stage as the action went on up front.

Sleeping Piggies ERF - Any and Everywhere

I just about lost my mind when I saw these cuties. Just look at them! They have no cares in the world.

Chickies ERF - Any and Everywhere

Even though they are awake, they are also cute!

Sauerkraut Comp ERF - Any and Everywhere

There was a sauerkraut competition, and these folks were going for it.

Lindy Grundy ERF - Any and Everywhere

I still haven't made my way to the Lindy Grundy shop yet, but I will very soon.

Let's Be Frank ERF - Any and Everywhere

A veggie dog from the folks at Let's Be Frank!

Jabberwocky ERF - Any and Everywhere

Jabberwocky Smooth Jerk Sauce for sale. Now that sounds good.

Herb Sale ERF - Any and Everywhere

Culinary herbs up for sale from a local vendor.

Harvest to Home - Any and Everywhere

Harvest to Home will deliver a box of veggies for you to plant and harvest yourself. Fun.

Food Forward LA ERF - Any and Everywhere

Food Forward LA organizes fruit picking volunteer groups, and I am going to join them soon!

Fat Uncle Marzipan ERF - Any and Everywhere

A deliciously pure marzipan sold by Fat Uncle Farms. I could eat this with a spoon.

Creme Caramel ERF - Any and Everywhere

I missed my chance to stick a spoon into Creme Caramel's custards. Next time, next time.

Coolhause ERF - Any and Everywhere

This was the most disappointing news of the day!

Chrystal VSC Jenny ERF - Any and Everywhere

Look, it's Jenny from Vintage Sugarcube! Such a sweet, sweet lady. We both have big hair too!

Chrystal Friends ERF - Any and Everywhere

Some folks who took one of my cooking classes found me in the Eat Real Beer Shed. Cheers!

CA Roll Temaki ERF - Any and Everywhere

California Roll from the Temaki Truck. A little one in our group ate it all in less than one minute!

Chrystal Friends 2 ERF - Any and Everywhere

A few friends and I smile for the cameras after a sushi snack. There

ChrisJenn ERF - Any and Everywhere

100 Seeds ERF - Any and Everywhere

The folks behind 100 Seeds of Change are doing a lot of great work to bring food justice to Inglewood. They were stationed right next to Chef Crystal Blanchette of Inner City Kitchens who works with members of urban communities to teach healthy eating choices.

Carlsbad Oysters ERF - Any and Everywhere

Carlsbad Aquafarm's sustainble, farm-raised oysters. They had a mighty long line of folks waiting for freshly shucked oysters.

Big Mista's ERF - Any and Everywhere

The line for Big Mista's was the longest thing ever in life. Maybe they were waiting for the spicy, sticky chicken 'wangs'? Or was it the pig candy? Whatever they wanted, the people were ready to wait!

Art Wall ERF - Any and Everywhere

I loved this mural that was in progress for the entire day. It's fun to see artists at work.

Congratulations to the Eat Real Festival team! They put on a hugely successful event that showcased local products and talent for thousands of people to enjoy. (Thousands of people who were not scared away by the silly threat of Carmageddon!) The outdoor performances, demonstrations and food trucks kept us busy. Venturing into the marketplace, we were hit by a throng of local vendors hawking their quality wares. Talk about an overload of stimuli. It was a great way to spend an afternoon with a few friends, and the best part for me was coming into contact with two local charity and community-based organizations that I would love to work with very soon. Food Forward LA and Inner City Kitchen, I’m talking about you! As for Eat Real Festival 2012, in the words of Arnold…”I’ll be back”.
